RWJF makes statement regarding Surgeon General’s vision for a healthy and fit nation

The following is a statement by Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation:

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) commends Surgeon General Regina Benjamin for her strong statement on the urgent need to reverse the obesity epidemic to create a healthy and fit nation. We welcome her visible leadership, knowing the important role her predecessors have played by speaking out on this issue.

The country is now at a singular moment in its fight against obesity. There has never been as much public awareness of the threat that obesity poses, nor as much effort by communities and policy makers to reshape the environments in which we live, learn, work, and play. And so Dr. Benjamin’s call for a national movement for healthier families, schools, workplaces and communities is especially propitious.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is deeply committed to reversing the epidemic of childhood obesity. If we all work together — policy makers, public health advocates, educators, business leaders, parents and others — we can leave a legacy of health for our children and grandchildren.
