Nemours to lead national initiative to promote healthy lifestyles for young children in child care

Nemours received a five year cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support healthy lifestyles for young children in child care. The funding, $4.2 million in the first year, and up to $20 million over five years, will be used to assist early care and education providers in six states adopt nutrition, breastfeeding support, physical activity, and screen time policies and practices.

This project is based on an evidence-based learning collaborative model that Nemours Health & Prevention Services (NHPS) and their community partners used with great success in Delaware. The National Office of Policy and Prevention will lead the effort to bring this model to scale nationally with the goal of reaching 84,500 children throughout Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and New Jersey in the first year.

NCCOR works in collaboration with Nemours on the Let’s Move! Child Care Checklist, an online tool developed by Nemours, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Checklist is designed to help child care programs identify ways to strengthen their nutrition and physical activity practices and policies. Users are taken through an online quiz, followed by a customized action plan to set goals and procedures for achieving a more health-promoting child care environment.

NCCOR supports this effort by tracking usage of the Let’s Move! Child Care Checklist quiz and making enhancements for a better user experience.

If you have any questions about the cooperative agreement, please feel free to contact Deborah Neff (debneff@nemours.org) or Allison Gertel-Rosenberg (agrosenb@nemours.org)
