Six ways to celebrate National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Rates of childhood obesity are finally beginning to slow, or even decline, in some communities, and this positive development lends urgency and momentum to childhood obesity research efforts.

In recognition of the start of National Childhood Obesity Awareness month on Sept. 1, the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) is calling on partners, public health and health care professionals, and others engaged with the movement to show their support for childhood obesity research.

This month, we offer six ways to celebrate National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

  1. Spread the word. Join our Thunderclap to spread the word about National Childhood Obesity Awareness month and the important role of research in moving the field forward. Use the hashtag #NCOAM to raise awareness among your networks.
  2. Join the Sept. 8 Connect & Explore Webinar. The webinar, Connect & Explore: A New Model for Integrating Clinical-Community Systems and Tackling Obesity, will examine soon-to-be published research advocating a shift in the framework to prevent and treat obesity and related chronic diseases. Register for the webinar or view our webinar archive.
  3. Accelerate research. NCCOR creates research tools that help investigators work more efficiently and effectively. As scientists themselves, NCCOR members know that researchers need the best tools to tackle the toughest public health questions. NCCOR maintains three free, online resources—the Catalogue of Surveillance Systems, Measures Registry, and Registry of Studies—which provide one-stop access for researchers to review, sort, and compare surveillance systems and measures relevant to childhood obesity research.
  4. Discover what’s happening in emerging areas. NCCOR advances the field by exploring emerging and important childhood obesity research topics. In 2014-2015, NCCOR convened experts to discuss Healthy Food Incentives, Lessons Learned from Global Efforts, and published a number of publications on leading topics including the Healthy Eating Index and Youth Energy Expenditure.
  5. Get funded. NCCOR keeps an active, updated list of funding opportunities on its site. Funding opportunities include rapid response funding mechanisms, which significantly reduce grant application times and enhance researchers’ ability to conduct time-sensitive research. View funding opportunities.
  6. Sign up for the NCCOR e-Newsletter. Nearly 3,000 researchers and practitioners subscribe to NCCOR’s monthly e-newsletter. The e-newsletter keeps readers abreast of the latest news and research, funding opportunities, webinars, and events.
