HBO’s Weight of the Nation series premieres new segment focused on children

In May 2012, HBO aired the four-part documentary series and public education initiative, “The Weight of the Nation™,” which explored the obesity epidemic in the United States. The project is back this May with a new series that focuses on the health of children and families called “The Weight of the Nation for Kids.” These three, half-hour films highlight young people actively improving the health of both themselves and their communities.
Directed by Emmy® winners Shari Cookson and Nick Doob, the second and third parts of the series, “Kebreeya’s salad days” and “Quiz Ed!” debut back-to-back on Tues., May 7 (5:30-6:30 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO, followed by an encore presentation of the first “The Weight of the Nation for Kids” special, 2012’s Emmy®-nominated “The Great Cafeteria Takeover,” at 6:30 p.m.
At home, in school, and on the playground, children are bombarded with choices, some healthier than others, and proper knowledge about nutrition and physical activity can help them make better selections. “The Weight of the Nation for Kids” shows young people taking an active role in their own health, as well as their family’s, while underscoring the importance of changing the environment to enable young people to make healthier decisions.
All films will be available in English and Spanish, and will also stream free of charge on HBO.com.
Nominated for an Emmy® for Outstanding Nonfiction Series, 2012’s “The Weight of the Nation” is an unprecedented collaboration between HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Made in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente, the series includes four documentary films, the three-part series “The Weight of the Nation for kids,” 12 bonus shorts, a robust website and social media campaign, and a book co-authored by Judith Salerno, Leonard D. Schaeffer, executive officer of the Institute of Medicine, and John Hoffman, executive producer of “The Weight of the Nation.”
