New podcast explores ways to halt the childhood obesity epidemic

Recently, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a funder of the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research, asked consulting firm The Greatest Good to put together a brainstorming session on childhood obesity.

The session was taped for podcast on the radio series “Freakanomics” called “100 Ways to Fight Obesity.” The discussion explores the biological, behavioral, political, and economic angles of obesity and features a panel of leaders in the childhood obesity field.

Several podcast participants also contribute to the activities and mission of NCCOR.

  • Steven Gortmaker of the Harvard School of Public Health is an NCCOR Envision project member as well as a member of the 2013 NCCOR External Scientific Panel (NESP).
  • Mary Story of the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota served on the Panel last year.

Other participants include:

  • Peter Attia, a former surgeon who now runs a nonprofit focused on nutrition
  • Kelly Brownell from the Rudd Center For Food Policy & Obesity at Yale
  • Geoffrey Canada of Harlem Children’s Zone
  • Bill Dietz, the former director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the CDC
  • Chris Economos, who studies obesity and childhood nutrition at Tufts
  • Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman
  • Harvard economist David Laibson
  • RWJF Health Group senior vice president Jim Marks
  • Brian Mullaney, co-founder of Smile Train and WonderWork
  • Eric Oliver, a political scientist at the University of Chicago, who has written a book about obesity
