NCCOR members participate in Society of Behavioral Medicine symposium

Today’s symposium at the Society of Behavioral Medicine’s 33rd Annual Meeting & Scientific Sessions discussed “accelerating the path from exploratory research to evidence-based guidelines for childhood obesity prevention.” The symposium included presentations from members of the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) and highlighted some of the work NCCOR has done to accelerate progress to reduce childhood obesity.Presenters included:

    • Nicola Dawkins, Ph.D., M.P.H., of ICF International
    • Shawna Mercer, Ph.D., Guide for Community Preventive Services, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
    • Laura Brennan, Ph.D., M.P.H., of the public health research and consulting company Transtria in St. Louis, Mo.
    • C. Tracy Orleans Ph.D., of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and NCCOR
    • Terry T-K Huang, Ph.D., of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health and NCCOR

NCCOR’s Huang discussed accelerating research applications, noting particular frameworks: the Translational Pipeline (assess evidence relevance, analyze evidence quality, and adopt evidence recommendations); and the L.E.A.D. Framework (locate evidence, evaluate evidence, assemble evidence, and inform decision).

Huang cited the NCCOR Catalogue of Surveillance Systems and Measures Registry as examples of online tools that are accelerating progress. He also noted NCCOR’s Envision childhood obesity modeling team’s pertinent work, e.g., estimating calorie gaps that explain the obesity epidemic; understanding policy impacts, including cost effectiveness; and understanding community dynamics for implementation of interventions.
