Strategies for population-level obesity prevention for children

For those who may be interested in current obesity best practices for children, the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a review providing a summary of population-level intervention strategies for preventing and controlling childhood obesity.

The review, published in the Annual Review of Nutrition and first-authored by Jennifer L. Foltz of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) illustrates ways to curb obesity in children through improving nutrition and physical activity behaviors. Information is summarized within settings where children frequent, including early care and educational facilities, schools, health care settings, and homes.

Intervention strategies were identified from:

  • Systematic reviews
  • Evidence- and expert consensus-based recommendations, guidelines, or standards from nongovernmental or federal agencies
  • Peer-reviewed synthesis reviews

Intervention examples were identified from:

  • Peer-reviewed literature
  • Additional sources with research-tested and practice-based initiatives

National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) member Heidi Blanck of CDC’s DNPAO was also an author.

Researchers and practitioners may find this review particularly helpful in setting priorities and finding research- and practice-tested intervention strategies that can be replicated in their own communities.
