This summer, the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR), in collaboration with the Fogarty International Center’s Center for Global Health Studies (CGHS), will host the Childhood Obesity Research Across Borders webinar series. These two webinars will identify the synergies between childhood obesity research conducted in Latin America and among Latino populations in the United States by sharing research results and lessons learned and identifying common research questions and strategies.
This Connect & Explore webinar series is based on the June 2021 special issue Childhood Obesity Prevention Across Borders: The Promise of US-Latin American Research Collaboration published in Obesity Reviews. The series explores nine cross-cutting themes and articulates a shared research agenda to address childhood obesity prevention in Latin America and among Latino populations in the United States.
Join us on June 17, from 12:00–1:00 p.m. ET for the first webinar, “Childhood Obesity Research Across Borders: Social Determinants of Health.” Hear from guest editors and authors of the supplement to understand the role that social determinants of health, specifically in terms of migration and social environment, play in childhood obesity in the United States and Latin America:
- Rafael Perez-Escamilla, Yale University
- Mireya Vilar-Compte, Universidad Iberoamericana
- Guadalupe X. Ayala, San Diego State University
On July 20, from 12:00–1:00 p.m. ET, join us for our second webinar, “Childhood Obesity Research Across Borders: The Physical Environment.” This webinar will focus on understanding how the physical and food environments impact childhood obesity and will identify opportunities for cross-border learning. Hear from guest editors and authors of the supplement:
- Abby King, Stanford University
- Olga Lucia Sarmiento Dueñas, Universidad de los Andes
- Ana Clara Duran, University of Sao Paulo
- Lindsey Smith-Taillie, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
You must register for each webinar to receive access. The event is free, but attendance is limited, so tell a colleague and register today!
Please consider sharing this information on your social networks using the hashtag #ConnectExplore. We will live-tweet the events, so be sure to follow the conversation at @NCCOR. For those who cannot attend, the webinar will be recorded and archived on www.nccor.org.
